Goals and objectives

We encouraged our audiences to take responsibility for their own health and well-being by understanding the effects of the uptake of tobacco and second hand smoke. The programme we delivered enabled all participants to grasp basic knowledge on healthy smokefree lifestyles by way of physical activity through Māori performing arts including mau-rakau; ti-rakau; poi; haka and waka-ama training.

Target audience

Te Kōhanga Reo TKR; Primary School; Te Kura Kaupapa Maori TKKM; Adult wananga participants; Wahine hapu - a wide spectrum of ages.
How did your project contribute to the Smokefree Aotearoa 2025 goal?
We utilised the legends of Maui - how he slowed down the sun and how he found fire; How he chose healthy lifestyles ie, Māori performing arts mediums - to enable him to achieve his goals and stay smokefree, on our wananga participants. Over 300 participants were involved in our project.

What happened

Using the legends of Maui as our guiding theme, at each wananga/marae stay we organised workshops covering the Māori performing arts aspect of our project to teach the values of a healthy smokefree lifestyle, and the effects and impacts tobacco smoking and second hand smoke can have on whānau and whānau members.

Partners

Sport Waikato (Huntly, Ngaruawahia, Hamilton, and Te Kuiti. Kaiewe Māori Women’s Welfare League (Kawhia).

Key outcomes

Over 300 participants were involved in the project. Aged from 3yrs through to adults and kaumātua. They were engaged in all activities and had an increased knowledge of the affects of tobacco smoking, second hand smoke and personal healthy lifestyles.

Key learnings

What worked well?

The smokefree resources were well received. The venues were a bonus as the respective marae are looking at implementing smokefree areas with a complete ban on smoking on the marae. We will be working with this marae to achieve this status. We did not need to use advertising as we had a full complement at our respective venues.

What could be done differently

Everything worked well including the weather as these activities involved outside workshops  including Ti Rakau.
