What happened
Engaged with businesses, sports teams and smokefree advocates to promote smokefree.
Partners
Smokefree Marlborough Coalition, Wairau Taniwha League team, National Smokefree Coalition, La Vosh Beauty.
Key outcomes
- Worked with workplaces to display smokefree signage and where possible have a smokefree coordinator.
- Engaged with whānau and hapū wahine about the importance of being smokefree and provided assistance through a quit coach.
- Gained traction with the community newspaper providing several articles.
- Supported by the local radio station in a four week campaign.
Key learnings
What worked well:
- Gaining support from the Marlborough community.
- Marlborough college students leading by example.
- Māori men driving smokefree for Māori men.
- Promoting smokefree resources as incentives to hapū wahine.
- Being supported by local media.
What didn’t work:
- Few have actually signed up to quit however there have been several enquiries.
What would you do differently:
- Dedicate local Coalition members per events so we have more awareness and evidence of what we are `actually’ doing.
