Kua takoto te manuka
Goals and objectives
Provide information and support to smokers via a Māori Radio (Kia Ora FM) and encourage them and their whānau to stop smoking.
Target audience
Kia Ora FM radio station listeners in the Manawatu, Horowhenua and Tararua.
Project fit with 2025 aims
Increasing opportunities for smokers and in particular Māori smokers to stop smoking and to increase their awareness of the availability of help.
What happened
Currently provide a fortnightly half hour radio show that challenges whānau to think about their smoking and informs them where to access help and educates them on the process and provisions of stop smoking support.
Partners
Kia Ora FM radio staff.
Key outcomes
Currently we have had one smoker phone in for support.
We have more hits on our facebook page.
Key learnings
Team’s enthusiasm to get the programme started. Opportunity for whānau to access support in another forum. Currently fortnightly, keen to expand to weekly. 30 minutes goes quickly, an increase to an hour would be good.
Would like to provide a Te Reo quit session.
